New articleSenator Feingold gave a speech down at UW Madison about the Patriot Act on Sunday night. The Badger Herald Online has <A HREF="http://www.badgerherald.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/04/05/4070cd06ece3c">an article up about it</a>. It's quite the interesting read: <i>"This is a naked power grab by the government itself," Feingold said, adding that the act is one of the most unpopular pieces of legislation he has ever seen. The Senate passed the bill 98-1 in October 2001. Feingold said the legislation for the Patriot Act was "rushed" and the process was "shut down by a democratic leadership in both houses," which progressed the bill through "fear and intimidation."</i> WisPolitics.com also has <a href="http://www.wispolitics.com/index.iml?Article=14077">their own report on it up here</a>. Here's an excerpt: <i>Speaking at the Memorial Union on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus Sunday afternoon, Feingold said it wasn’t as easy voting against a bill with such a red, white and blue name in the same year as the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “It was not my goal to vote against the USA Patriot Act four weeks after 9-11… It is not my idea of a good time,” Feingold told the largely student crowd of a few hundred. Still, he said he took “one more hard swallow before I voted no.” </i>
