) about funding after school programs:
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold is calling for full funding of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program (CCLC) to help families provide safe and high-quality after-school care for their children. In a letter to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, Feingold and a number of his Senate collages asked that the Subcommittee fully fund the program in 2005. Full funding would provide 2.8 million children with after-school programs that engage them in athletic, creative, and academically stimulating activities in a safe place. "21st Century Community Learning Centers are vital to children and working families across America," the letter read. "Students who regularly attend quality after-school programs have better grades and conduct in school, better peer relations and emotional adjustment, and lower incidences of drug use, violence and pregnancy."
