) about how a third of Republicans like Feingold:
Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold's reputation for taking independent stands on issues likely figures in his winning favorable ratings from about one-third of Republicans, a pollster says. Although a GOP leader disputed the accuracy of the Badger Poll finding, poll director G. Donald Ferree said Feingold's maverick status apparently gives him some appeal that crosses party lines. Among the latest stands by Feingold have been his opposition to President Bush on Iraq, the Patriot Act and the Medicare drug benefit. Ferree said Feingold's cross-party appeal is likely to slip once Republicans nominate a candidate and the November election race focuses on the incumbent's record.
