Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold on President Bush’s Stop in Appleton
Posted at 20:54:14 on March 30, 2004
Senator Feingold responded to President Bush's Appleton stop:
I was pleased to see the President speak to the manufacturing crisis we face in Wisconsin and throughout many parts of the country during his stop in Appleton today.
With almost 80,000 Wisconsin manufacturing jobs lost since 2000, the continued erosion of our manufacturing base has been devastating for communities across our state. I believe that our trade policies of the past decade and more, which I opposed, are at the very heart of this problem. I am glad that the President called for fairer trade in his speech today, but I am skeptical that we will see this administration actually change its trade policies. The President continues to push for the same unbalanced trade agreements that have shipped thousands of good manufacturing jobs overseas. Unless we change our trade policies we will only lose more businesses and jobs.
I regret the President did not spend more time on a critical problem in Wisconsin, skyrocketing health insurance costs. Businesses throughout Wisconsin continue to struggle with high health care costs and this issue should be at the top of our country's economic agenda as well. I support universal health care but I believe in the meantime we should take consensus steps to address the health care problem. For example, I have introduced legislation that would help smaller companies pool together to save money on health insurance. It is less controversial than other approaches that have been proposed, and it is based on efforts in Wisconsin that we have actually seen work.
