Feingold Presses to Increase Opportunities in Higher Education

Senator Feingold's office put out a press release today:
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold today, in a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, urged an increase in funding for the TRIO Programs. TRIO was established by Congress as a series of programs (originally just three) to help low-income Americans enter college, and graduate. TRIO programs help students overcome economic, social and cultural barriers to higher education. Over 1,200 colleges, universities, community colleges and agencies nationwide now offer TRIO programs in America. TRIO funds are distributed to institutions through competitive grants. Programs within TRIO include: Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Student Support Service (SSS), Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC), and McNair.
"Many students today dream of going to college, but the things that can put college out of reach for some students don't always get the attention that they deserve," Feingold said. "Students who face these additional barriers to higher education need a helping hand, and thanks to the TRIO program, more students are getting the help they need. TRIO offers hope to millions of students across the country who dream of a college education. Increased funding for these important programs is needed so that more students can get the higher education they deserve."
