Morons.org published a letter they received from Senator Feingold in response to a letter they had sent him. You can read the full letter online here. Here's an excerpt:
On May 21, 2003, Representative Marilyn Musgrave introduced H.J Res. 56, a proposed amendment to the U.S Constitution that would ban gay marriage. The proposed amendment is currently pending in the House Judiciary Committee. On November 25, 2003, Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) introduced a Senate version of the amendment, S.J. Res. 26, which was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which I serve.
I plan to oppose S.J. Res. 26 and H.J. Res. 56 because the legal recognition of marriage traditionally has been a matter of state law and should remain so. A constitutional amendment banning gay unions is innappropriate. Congress should not spend time on an issue that is best left to the states and religious institutions. Furthermore, Congress and the American people are facing many pressing challenges, including creating jobs for Americans, fighting terrorism, and providing prescription drugs for seniors. At a time when our nation should be uniting to meet these challenges, it doesn't serve the American people to focus on such a divisive issue.
