Updated: Early Polls Favor Feingold

More on what was reported last night -- the Capital Times has published an article on the Badger Poll as well (read the article here), which they cosponsored with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. To quote, "A majority of Wisconsin voters say they want to send Democrat Russ Feingold back to the U.S. Senate this fall, according to the latest Badger Poll.
"Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said they would prefer Feingold over a generic 'someone else,' a figure roughly comparable to the last Badger Poll in January.
"That puts the two-term Democrat in 'relatively good' shape for his re-election campaign this fall, said Badger Poll director G. Donald Ferree Jr.
"Feingold's showing continues to be stronger than Republican President Bush. Forty-five percent of those surveyed said they wanted to see Bush re-elected, while 50 percent picked the generic 'someone else.'
"Feingold campaign manager George Aldrich said in a statement that the results indicate 'the people of Wisconsin continue to appreciate Sen. Feingold's effective work and are pleased with his willingness to stand up to the tough questions on their behalf.'
"The poll also found that Feingold's three major Republican opponents - state Sen. Bob Welch, auto dealer Russ Darrow and construction executive Tim Michels - are still largely unknown to most voters."

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has posted an article (read the article here) about how Russ Feingold is doing well in early polls. According to the article, "By 51% to 29%, residents polled in March said they would like to see Feingold re-elected for his third term, with the remainder not answering the question or saying they didn't know.
"In a separate question, 47% said they had a favorable impression of Feingold, while 19% said their view was unfavorable, figures that have stayed relatively constant since fall. About a third said they didn't know enough to have formed an impression."
They do mention that the Republican opposition barely ranked 5% per candidate, but this is because the advertising blitz has yet to begin - so who knows that those numbers will look like. According to the article, the numbers on the Republican side of things probably won't solidify until much closer to the September 14th Republican primary.
