Feingold, Kohl Urge FDA to Protect the Integrity of Dairy Products

Senator Russ Feingold's office put out a release today (read the full release here). Here's an excerpt:
U.S. Senators Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl, along with a bipartisan group of their Senate colleagues, are urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect American dairy producers by opposing any changes to "standard of identity" regulations for certain dairy products. Standard of identity regulations define what a given food product is, its name, and the ingredients that must be used, or may be used, in the production of the food. The FDA is considering changing standard of identity regulations to allow the use of dry milk protein concentrate (MPC), which is primarily produced overseas.
"When American consumers buy cheese, yogurt and ice cream, they have come to expect a high quality product," Feingold said. "The FDA needs to oppose changes in regulations that would not only lower the quality of the dairy products, but also harm our dairy farmers with unfair competition in the marketplace."
