Senator Russ Feingold's office put out a release yesterday (read the full release here) on the "Department of Defense (DoD) Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program". Here's an excerpt:
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold has joined a number of his Senate colleagues in pressing the Senate Appropriations Committee to fund the Department of Defense (DoD) Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) at the level needed to continue its valuable research. In the span of only twelve years, the BCRP has established itself as a model medical research program, respected throughout the cancer community for its innovative and accountable approach. The groundbreaking research performed through the program has the potential to benefit not just breast cancer research, but research into all cancers, as well as other diseases. Feingold and his colleagues are asking that the BCRP be appropriated $150 million for next year.
"Breast cancer continues to be a leading killer of women – 40,000 die each year from the dreaded disease," Feingold said. "This year alone, more than 258,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This is a serious health issue that must be adequately addressed."
Originally the DoD BCRP was supposed to just look at women in the military, but it has been expanded to be part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program. Since the program's inception, there have been incredible discoveries at a very rapid rate that offer fascinating insights into the biology of breast cancer.
