Feingold Works to Increase Coverage for Farmers and Their Families
Posted at 12:29:15 on April 21, 2004
Senator Russ Feingold's office put out a release today (read full release here).
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold is working to offer farmers and other self-employed individuals more security for their families by updating the tax options available to them when their income falls. Currently, self-employed individuals can choose to pay taxes based on $1,600 of income - even as their income falls below that amount - in order to maintain eligibility for survivors, disability, and Medicare hospital insurance benefits. Due to inflation, the $1,600 no longer affords adequate protection for many families. Feingold's Farmer Tax Fairness Act of 2004 would update the tax code to reflect the income level required for full coverage while still giving farmers and self-employed individuals the choice on how to pay their taxes.

"Self-employed individuals can have highly variable income, particularly for farmers whose livelihood is often subject to the whims of Mother Nature," Feingold said. "We need to update the tax code to reflect today's income levels so farmers and other self-employed individuals are able to protect their families while still offering them options."
