Senator Russ Feingold asks for mercury rule explanation
Posted at 11:41:9 on May 6, 2004
The Journal Times Online has an article online (read the full article here) regarding Senator Feingold's criticism of the Bush Administration's changes to wording in documents regarding mercury content in water:
U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, is seeking the support of his fellow senators in asking the Bush administration to explain whether members of the White House staff weakened a government rule about mercury by changing its language.

The rule is still in process and has been the target of environmental and sport fishing groups who fear that it is too weak.

The recommendation from the Environmental Protection Agency was based on research by the National Academy of Sciences, Feingold wrote. Yet according to press reports, he wrote, in one case dealing with damage in the womb administration staff reportedly changed the phrase "are at increased risk of poor performance on neurobehavioral tests" to "may be at increased risk."
