1337ness in the Workplace
Posted Sep 17, 2009 - 12:27:21

1337=LEETSo I know I usually avoid talking about my job on this site - as I have no desire to lose said position, and have always acted with a little bit of caution when it comes to even mentioning WHERE I work. In this case though, I just had to share.

The company I work for is a major corporation, and like any major corporation they sure do love acronyms. They literally are everywhere, and you cannot avoid them. Walking into a department you don't work in and overhearing other people talk is like listening to moon-speak (which is my current favorite way to describe it). You know they're supposed to be communicating, but the language sounds utterly foreign and alien to a speaker of any Earthbound language.

That said, there is a new program HR has recently introduced in the past few weeks. What it does is absolutely unimportant to this article... but what it is called is just hilarious to me.

I speak, of course, about the "LEET Team."

Now, I'm sure that some HR person thought this was a brilliant name. I'm also sure they Googled it and nothing came up that people would make jokes about. What they didn't take into account was that there is an entire subculture that uses the word LEET... but they spell it "1337."

Now I have a hard time not cracking up anytime someone hands me a post it with the LEET Team logo, sends and e-mail across the company about it, or even mentions the LEET Team. I had to sit through an entire meeting one day where they must have said the phrase 20 to 30 times...

...and I knew I was the only person in the room who thought it was funny.

So there you go, apparently my company is promoting 1337ness in the workplace. Perhaps I shall offer my mad skillz and h3lp t|-|3/\/\ 4C/-/13\/3 7074|_ 1337n355...

...or maybe not. Apparently I'm easily amused.

Rest assured, you are not the only one who's trying not to laugh.
