Why I'm not writing Con Reports anymore...
Posted Aug 22, 2011 - 11:28:54

ConSo some of you who follow my site have noticed that I haven't written up a convention report since last year, despite attending several cons since then. There are reasons for this, and I really think it's because I've been moving towards a very important decision:

I'm going to stop writing convention reports.

I've been doing variations of con reports for almost a decade now, and for a long time it really was the best way for me to share my experiences. I mean, a little anecdote here, some photos there (and an occasional stick figure)... it was a great way for me to review an event. But back in 2009 I started writing UnCONventional, and things have started to change.

UnCONventional is, of course, inspired by my real experiences. And often when I was writing up con reports last year, I'd find myself saying "maybe I shouldn't include this, so I can use it in a strip." On other occasions, I *did* recycle a story in the comic that I had already included in a con report - and it really felt like cheating. It also meant that everyone reading the comic who had already read the con report knew exactly what real thing I was making a joke about.

And hiding the real personalities behind some of my jokes is important to me.

Part of Chapter 3 of UnCONventional is going to involve the characters attending a first year con (as quite a few have popped up in my home region). So when I went to a first year convention, Ramen Con, this weekend - I found myself going "should I write a con report?" and I decided that I shouldn't.

And that made me finalize this decision.

So yeah, for the time being, I won't be writing any new convention reports so I can save the material for the comic strip. Hopefully no one will be disappointed.

Do you plan to reveal the name of this first year con in the near future on your blog reports?
I actually haven't chosen a name for it yet.
Riceball Kon

It will pay homage to a terrible film we force you to watch every year.
