ASCII Arcade Game of Doom!
Posted Oct 3, 2005 - 16:55:08

DOS SoftwareSo, lately, as I've been taking my notes on a DOS based machine (long story involving a dead harddrive and a random boot floppy), I've also been goofing around working on an arcade-style shooter whose graphics are exclusively ASCII characters.

I know, I know - it's been done dozens of times before, and isn't really all that worthwhile an activity. But it's fun, and playing it has been fun. It's also an exercise in completely unprofessional programming. If I were developing a webapp (or any sort of commercial product) I'd be smacking my head at this... but it's a nice diversion. I'm at the point where the basic functionality works, you shoot, enemies die, Boss battles occur at the right times and I'm considering adding power ups and bonuses. It's all pretty typical - and mildly addictive.

This has lead me to thinking though: Should I just release my old DOS programs on the site? I mean, obviously things like ProJammer (one of the few audio utilities to support the failed MKJ audio format) would be ignorable, as they don't work in Win2k or WinXP, but some of the random Games might be fun (and my Dice Rolling Software, etc.) Maybe I'd also put up the stuff I cowrote for the TSS days, and my craptastic First Person Shooter?

What do you guys think? Do I add a DOS Software section or not? I'm thinking that if I can find enough random programs it would be worth it.

Man, I'm a nerd...

Trae.. IF you had a dos games section.. I'd either take my current laptop, make a new partition, and force it to boot with win95.. OR I'd resurrect my old win98 P2-233mhz laptop... Just to try them out....
Well the one I'm working on right now (which is about 75% done) will run in Windows 2000/XP's emulation without problem.
