Arranging Speakers

Speakers

Because one of the primary focuses of the “Books not Bush” National Student Rally is to highlight and inform students on the failed policies of President Bush, it is crucial to arrange for speakers to speak on relevant topics at your rally. Speakers can be found pretty much anywhere, but if possible, contact local/state speakers who have speaking experience and are willing to talk to big crowds. They can include media personnel, anti-war activists, and politicians.

If you cannot bring in any more prominent speakers, investigate as to whether any professors from your campus would be willing to give speeches. Additionally, there may be students with public speaking experience who want to speak.

Some suggestions on arranging speakers:
  • Ideally, arrange to get 2-3 speakers for your rally. Each should probably speak for no more than ten minutes.

  • Arrange for the speakers to address different aspects of the Bush administration’s failings. For example, one could speak on the war in Iraq, one could speak on domestic policies, and one could speak on why it is important for students to vote Bush out.

  • Ask the speakers to attend for little or no cost. Make it clear that your organization isn’t well funded if that is the case and that you need them to speak for the cause of removing Bush. If they are truly progressive they will in all likelihood agree to speak for minimal cost.
